Instead of paying taxes, Apple has taxes that are deferred for as long as it chooses.

In total, I estimate from corporate disclosure documents, American multinational companies have $2 trillion of untaxed profits offshore because they did just what Apple has done.

Had Congress required those companies to pay up last year it would have been the equivalent of all the income taxes paid by everyone in America from January until July 10. Imagine that, all the income taxes taken out of your pay or pension from January into the middle of summer just so Apple and other multinational companies can profit today and pay their taxes someday.

I 200% believe that when JJ was auditioning a bunch of Brown men a while back and everyone guessed the new villain was Khan, he scrambled and tried to hide the “surprise” by casting a White guy b/c he was mad that there are no secrets on the internet. And you can’t convince me that Carol wasn’t some shitty last minute addition too. I’m sure when he was reading a bunch of blondes everyone guessed Christine Chapel and he was like “shit you guys”, and stuck Actual Luna Bar Carol Marcus in there instead.

The thing that gets me is that the reason why JJ and Whathisface Dusseldorf are in control of a ton of the major franchises currently being rebooted is that they branded themselves in the industry as masters of “Cinema 3.0” or metatextual narrative that exists both in the media and through expanded media, fandom culture. They actually don’t understand either of these things and actively make decisions that fuck that shit up. I think that vocal backlash is the only way to ensure that meetings that happened ten years ago where they significantly misrepresented the depth of their narrative understanding and abilities to spin that into multiple avenue streams don’t destroy the potential of a franchise being reformed to take advantage of its metatextual universe. Basically I’m talking about Star Wars. We have to take Star Wars away from him. We have to. George Lucas wasn’t doing great stuff with it, but at least it was his baby. There has got to be at least one person who likes Star Wars who can make Star Wars.

Grades are in. Thank god no drama like last semester. GPA damage is officially repaired.

Last semester a professor tried to give me a C even though I earned an A and we compromised on a B. It wasn’t worth it to me to have to go to all those meetings. Cher Horowitzing a situation if you will. Thank god everything went smoothly this semester. Well, I mean, aside from completely sacrificing my social life in exchange for As. BUT I DID IT. I just need to finish my thesis over the summer and spend the time that most people use to complete phase II for rewrites and edits.

The even weirder thing is that the model isn’t even really wearing it. It’s photoshopped. I’m pretty sure the whole model is a 3D illustration. The face might be from a real person, but the body is definitely not real and the suit is clearly a different layer from the body. One of the funniest things about my discipline is that despite knowing I would never get picked to be a model for clothes, I am aware from the freelance work me and my colleagues do that most of the “modelling” done these days to sell clothes is done by a chubby animator on a computer.

Rookie has a really great interview with Lauren Greenfield, a photographer and filmmaker who made The Queen of Versailles.

The only time I ever saw someone actually walk out of a money box with tons of money was in 8th grade. The girl was wearing a big belled maxi skirt (over leggings). The fan blew the skirt up and all the money went in. It was amazing. It extended to all sides of the box but didn’t flip over her head. Basically, she created a skirt barrier/scoop. She just had to hold it closed when they turned off the fan. You should have seen the faces of the operators. I’ll always remember that day as the day I saw a little girl slap the system in the face.

How do I love Janine Kishi? Let me count the ways. Oh, my poor misunderstood bb.

For real, though, in all the chapter 2s and in Claudia-narrated books, she gets a bum rap from the other characters about being smart and boring and mousy or whatever. But when you look at how she behaves, she’s a pretty kind sister. She really loves and supports Claudia - in her art, her schoolwork, when their parents are being too hard on her. Janine goes out of her way to use her good reputation to stand up for Claudia when she’s accused of cheating on a test because she trusts that her sister is not a cheater and knows she worked hard (because for all of Claudia’s complaining about her parents forcing her to study with Janine and blah blah blah, Janine is also spending time she could be doing her own shit to help Claud with comparatively remedial stuff).

The narration says one thing, but Janine’s actions tell a totally different story.

This post reminds me I really need to get back to writing that Janine/Charlie masterlist and manifesto.

One of the things I really do appreciate about this show is that it consistently rips apart the concept of the Übermensch. Instead of framing Holmes as superhuman, the show suggests that he is not. He’s just a good detective. The narrative for Holmes in many regards is his journey learning that other people are sometimes better than him at things. Moreover, they present thinking of yourself as superior as a flaw that will be exploited by capable people who are not so narcissistic as to think of themselves as superior to anyone.
